Test the Quiet Future Strategic Behaviour Diagnostic

Strategies rarely fail dramatically. They usually fail quietly.

The vision is clear. The goals are ambitious. The strategy document is carefully written.

Yet, everyday decisions inside organisations often remain largely unchanged. This is a pattern that many leaders recognise. The strategy may look convincing on paper, but its influence on daily behaviour is often limited. The question is not necessarily whether the strategy is wrong, but whether the environment surrounding decision-making supports it. To explore this challenge, I recently developed a small experimental tool: the Quiet Future Strategic Behaviour Diagnostic.

You can purchase the interactive version here: https://futuresjournal.eu/b/tSlru

What the diagnostic explores

The diagnostic is based on a simple observation:

Strategy translates into behaviour only when the conditions surrounding decisions support it. The tool examines six behavioural conditions that often determine whether strategic intentions become everyday actions:

Agency

Do people have the authority to act differently?

Defaults

Do systems and processes support the desired behaviour?

Friction

Is the new behaviour easier or harder than existing routines?

Capacity

Do people have the time, skills, and resources needed?

Attention

What do leaders consistently signal is important?

Meaning

Do people understand why the change matters?

If even one of these conditions is weak, the strategy can slowly drift away from practice.

A behavioural futures perspective

The diagnostic is part of a broader idea I describe as behavioural futures.

Behavioural futures focuses on the behavioural architecture through which strategic visions become everyday decisions. It studies how structures, environments, culture, and perceived agency translate future narratives into micro-behaviours that accumulate into real outcomes.

In other words, it explores how the futures we imagine today shape the behaviours that ultimately create tomorrow.

Prefer a workbook version?

If you prefer a facilitated or offline reflection format, the diagnostic is also available as a downloadable workbook.

The workbook version is designed for:

  • strategy workshops
  • leadership discussions
  • foresight sessions
  • organisational reflection exercises.

It allows teams to explore the same behavioural conditions together and discuss where strategic intentions may encounter everyday friction.

You can download the workbook here:

https://futuresjournal.eu/b/brp9e (it will be free until 31.3.2026. In April 2026, this ebook will be only available when you purchase the app).

Why this tool exists

The diagnostic is intentionally simple. It is not meant to replace deeper organisational analysis. Instead, it acts as a thinking tool for strategists, leaders, and foresight practitioners.

Sometimes, a short reflection exercise can reveal something important: Strategy rarely fails through visible collapse. It erodes through small behavioural misalignments that accumulate over time.

Understanding those quiet dynamics is what the Quiet Future work explores.
