Introduction to Behavioural Futures

Understand how the future shapes behaviour today and make more thoughtful choices about what happens next.

You have a strategy for change. How will it translate into everyday behaviour?

Introduction to Behavioural Futures is a self-paced course for professionals working with strategy, organisational change, foresight, behavioural insights, service design or innovation. Learn to connect futures thinking with the assumptions, expectations and everyday conditions that shape whether people can act. Bring one real decision or change challenge, and work it through the course.

By the end, you will have a Behavioural Futures Action Map: a practical view of the assumptions to examine, the people affected, the conditions shaping action, and a small next step you can test.

What’s included

  • Six modules and twelve lessons
  • Short knowledge checks and a final assessment
  • A downloadable workbook with the Behavioural Futures Action Map
  • Practical frameworks including the Quiet Future Framework, Strategy–Behaviour Alignment and DECIDE+F alongside the traditional approaches

Allow around 75–100 minutes for the lessons, or 2–3 hours if you complete the workbook activities as well. No prior futures or behavioural science experience is needed.

A small fly, a useful reminder

You’ll see a small fly appear throughout the course. It represents the “fly on the wall” observer: curious, attentive and interested in how things connect. It’s a reminder to notice behaviour, the conditions around it and the wider systems shaping it—then ask how those observations connect to the futures people imagine and the choices they make today.

What you’ll learn

By the end of the course, you will have practised how to:

  • Notice assumptions and expectations about the future that may shape a decision.
  • Distinguish observable behaviour from interpretations about why it happens.
  • Explore signals of change and consider more than one possible future.
  • Listen for how people experience anticipated futures and how much agency they feel.
  • Examine the conditions that can support or obstruct everyday action.
  • Use DECIDE+F to bring futures thinking into a decision.
  • Create a Behavioural Futures Action Map and identify a small, ethical next test.

Your course journey:

The course has six modules and twelve lessons. Each module builds on the previous one, taking you from observation to a practical next step.

  • See the future already at work - explore futures literacy and the assumptions beneath a decision.
  • Make more futures available - notice signals of change, imagine alternatives, and trace possible consequences.
  • Understand how people meet the future - consider how feelings and perceived agency shape people’s experience of change.
  • Examine conditions around behaviour - use the Quiet Future Framework—Agency, Defaults, Friction, Capacity, Attention and Meaning—to explore what shapes everyday action.
  • Decide with the future in view - apply DECIDE+F and shape a small test that can help you learn.
  • Bring it together - complete your Behavioural Futures Action Map, then plan how to review and continue.

You’ll find short knowledge checks along the way and an eight-question final assessment. The course is designed to take about 75–100 minutes for the lessons, or around 2–3 hours with the workbook activities. Go at your own pace.

Your downloadable workbook

The course includes the Behavioural Futures Workbook, with prompts and activities to help you apply the lessons to a case of your own. You will use it to capture observations, explore assumptions and possible futures, consider behavioural conditions, and plan a modest next test.

The workbook also includes the Behavioural Futures Action Map, which brings your questions, observations, future assumptions, affected people, behavioural conditions, and next steps together in one place. It’s a working document you can revisit as you learn more.

Who this course is for

This course may be useful if you work with strategy, organisational or service development, innovation, facilitation, policy, sustainability or change and want to connect futures thinking with what people actually do.

You don’t need to be a futurist, behavioural scientist or manager. Bring curiosity and a real situation you are able to reflect on. You can work with an organisational example or a personal work decision.

About your instructor

I developed the frameworks and tools used in this course to help connect imagined futures with decisions, everyday conditions, and action.
